PSA Grading ROI: Which Categories Actually Deliver
By KOLT, Senior Analyst, KLLKT.in
Grading ROI Framework
ROI is measured as the PSA 10 multiplier over raw value: (PSA 10 price ÷ raw price). A 30× multiplier means a $2 raw card becomes worth $60 graded. We ignore grading fees (~$20–$30 per card) for relative comparison, focusing on value creation. Vintage cards with already-high raw prices rarely justify the cost unless they hit pristine 10s.
Baseball Analysis
Modern rookies show strong but inconsistent multipliers. Aaron Judge 2025 Topps Chrome moves from $2.19 raw to $85.72 PSA 10 — a 39.1× return. Trey Yesavage 2024 Bowman Draft Chrome achieves 28.8× ($2.81 → $80.84). Paul Skenes 2026 Topps only reaches 24.0× ($1.36 → $32.69). Baseball benefits from high print runs and collector demand for star rookies, but saturation caps upside unless the player becomes a perennial MVP candidate.
Basketball Analysis
Basketball splits into two camps. Cooper Flagg 2025 Topps Holiday delivers a solid 29.2× ($3.05 → $88.95). The 1994 Michael Jordan Topps Finest, however, only achieves 14.8× ($221.88 → $3,289.15) despite the massive absolute dollar gain. High raw prices on legends reduce percentage ROI; modern prospects with low entry cost outperform when they hit 10s.
Football Analysis
Football produces the widest range. John Elway 1986 Topps explodes from $2.50 raw to $2,133.26 PSA 10 — an extraordinary 853.3× multiplier. Among modern cards, Tyler Shough 2025 Donruss jumps 39.4× ($2.23 → $87.86) while Drake Maye Select only manages 6.6×. Emmitt Smith 1990 Fleer Update sits at 10.5×. The vintage outlier (Elway) and the cheap 2025 prospect (Shough) both outperform baseball equivalents because football collectors pay aggressive premiums for clean examples of quarterbacks and high-draft picks.
Pokémon Analysis
Pokémon grading ROI is weakest. Detective Pikachu 2023 Japanese promo rises only 1.6× ($201.61 → $327.42). Pikachu EX 2025 Prismatic Evolutions reaches 6.8× ($45.96 → $310.72). The Team Aqua’s Kyogre data is anomalous (PSA 9 at $7,163.93 vs PSA 10 at $1,042.36), but even taking the higher figure the multiplier remains modest. Pokémon’s sealed-product culture and already-high raw prices on chase cards limit grading leverage.
Which Sport Wins
Football delivers the best ROI. It combines the single highest multiplier (Elway vintage) with competitive modern returns (Shough at 39.4×). Baseball is a close second for volume grading of rookies, while basketball and Pokémon lag due to either high raw bases or low multipliers. The winning pattern is clear: low-raw-price cards (<$5) from the current or prior year that feature quarterbacks or top prospects produce the steepest curves when they grade 10.
Your Grading Strategy
Target modern football and baseball rookies under $4 raw with strong prospect narratives. Submit in bulk during PSA’s lower-tier promotions to keep per-card costs near $15. Reserve vintage submissions only for cards with documented high-grade scarcity. Avoid Pokémon and mid-tier basketball legends unless you already own the raw copies. Focus on quantity of cheap modern cards rather than chasing single high-dollar vintage gems.
