PSA Grading ROI: Which Categories Deliver the Highest Returns?

By KOLT, Senior Analyst, KLLKT.in

Grading ROI Framework

ROI is calculated as the price multiplier from raw to PSA 10: Multiplier = PSA 10 Value ÷ Raw Value. Higher multipliers indicate stronger upside when grading succeeds. Vintage cards show extreme multipliers because population reports are thin and condition sensitivity is high. Modern cards require volume and hit rates above 70% PSA 10 to break even after fees.

Baseball Analysis

The 1977 Nolan Ryan delivers the highest observed multiplier:

14388.92 ÷ 8.85 = 1,626×

Even PSA 9 returns 301×. Vintage baseball remains the clearest outlier because raw copies trade near bulk prices while high-grade examples command five-figure premiums. Modern baseball is absent from the dataset, implying lower current liquidity for new releases.

Basketball Analysis

Vintage again leads. The 1997 Michael Jordan Skybox Z-Force shows:

1577.06 ÷ 41.74 = 37.8×

Modern rookies vary sharply. Victor Wembanyama 2025 Topps Finest reaches 12.2×, while Kon Knueppel lacks PSA 10 data and Jayson Tatum 2017 Prizm only achieves 5.3×. Basketball ROI is concentrated in pre-2000 issues where eye appeal drives exponential pricing.

Football Analysis

The 1986 John Elway posts an exceptional 828× multiplier:

2063.08 ÷ 2.49 = 828×

Among modern cards, Caleb Williams reaches 49× and Abdul Carter 2.6×. C.J. Stroud shows only 18×. Football’s ROI window favors 1980s stars and select high-profile 2023–2025 rookies that achieve strong PSA 10 populations early.

Pokemon Analysis

2023 Obsidian Flames Gloom leads modern Pokémon:

296.67 ÷ 17.51 = 16.9×

Team Rocket’s Mewtwo EX reaches 36.7×, but most 2025 releases stay below 20×. Pokémon ROI is volume-driven; low raw prices allow bulk submissions, yet few cards exceed 30× without chase-rarity status.

Which Sport Wins?

Baseball wins on peak multiplier (1,626×). Football follows closely with vintage examples. Basketball offers solid vintage returns but weaker modern consistency. Pokémon provides the most accessible entry point for new submitters due to lower raw costs and steady 10–35× upside on select modern hits.

Your Grading Strategy

  1. Prioritize pre-1990 baseball and football lots under $15 raw when population reports are under 200 PSA 10.
  2. Submit modern basketball and football only when raw price is <$5 and recent comps show PSA 10 premiums above 25×.
  3. Use Pokémon for scale: target 50+ card submissions of cards with 15×+ historical multipliers to offset grading fees.
  4. Always factor 15–20% rejection/upgrade risk into projected ROI.

Vintage baseball and football currently deliver the strongest risk-adjusted returns when condition is favorable.
