PSA Grading ROI: Which Sports Deliver the Highest Returns?

Grading ROI Framework
ROI is calculated as (PSA 10 value − Raw value) ÷ Raw value. We prioritize PSA 10 premiums where available; PSA 9 is used only when PSA 10 data is missing. Cards with raw prices under $10 that reach PSA 10 multipliers above 30× represent the highest-leverage opportunities because grading costs become negligible relative to the value uplift.
Baseball Analysis
Baseball shows the widest spread between modern and vintage performance. Nick Kurtz (2025 Topps Cosmic Chrome) moves from $2.63 raw to $80.03 PSA 10 — a 30.4× multiplier. Aaron Judge (2017 Topps Update) only achieves 6.3× ($31.92 → $199.97), illustrating that recent superstars with high print runs deliver modest returns.
The vintage outliers dominate. Ken Griffey Jr. (1989 Upper Deck) returns 65.3× ($94.05 → $6,145.19). Pete Rose (1973 Topps) explodes to 181.6× at PSA 9 ($10.35 → $1,879.13). These results stem from extreme condition sensitivity in pre-1980 cardboard; even modest population control in high grades creates massive scarcity premiums.
Basketball Analysis
Basketball produces the single highest modern multiplier in the dataset. Michael Jordan (1993 Upper Deck) jumps 153.4× ($2.29 → $351.19). The card’s low raw price combined with Jordan’s enduring collector demand creates an asymmetric payoff.
Among current stars, Caitlin Clark (2025 Panini Chronicled) delivers 15.4× ($38.91 → $600), while Anthony Edwards (2020 Illusions) reaches 27.0× ($2.27 → $61.30). The pattern is clear: low-cost modern rookies with star potential outperform established veterans whose raw prices already embed much of the graded premium.
Football Analysis
Football’s results are mixed but promising for low-end modern cards. Tyler Shough (2025 Panini Phoenix) achieves 48.5× ($1.67 → $80.92). J.J. McCarthy (2024 Donruss Optic) manages only 12.6× ($4.59 → $57.67). The higher multiplier on Shough reflects thinner supply and stronger prospect narrative at the time of grading submission.
Pokémon Analysis
Pokémon cards show consistent but rarely explosive returns. Team Rocket’s Weezing (2025 Scarlet & Violet) reaches 14.1× ($9.11 → $128.65). Machoke (2023 151) hits 9.7× and the Charizard promo 6.7×. The category benefits from broad collector participation, yet print runs and parallel sets cap the upper-end multipliers compared with vintage sports cardboard.
Which Sport Wins?
Baseball wins on vintage cards; basketball wins on ultra-low-cost modern icons. The highest absolute ROI belongs to Pete Rose at PSA 9 (181.6×) and Michael Jordan 1993 at PSA 10 (153.4×). For repeatable modern strategy, basketball and football low-end rookies (Edwards 27×, Shough 48.5×) outperform Pokémon and most baseball prospects. Vintage baseball remains the highest-ceiling category when population reports are favorable.
Your Grading Strategy
- Target raw cards under $5 with established collector demand and PSA 10 populations below 500.
- Prioritize 1990s basketball icons and 1980s–1990s baseball rookies over current-year product.
- Avoid high-print modern stars (Judge, McCarthy) unless raw cost is negligible.
- Submit Pokémon only when the PSA 10 premium exceeds 10× and you already own the card.
Focus on condition-sensitive vintage and low-cost modern prospects. The math consistently rewards patience with older cardboard and selective aggression on undervalued modern rookies.
